NEWSLETTER THEME: DETACHMENT

In order to acquire anything in the physical universe, you have to relinquish your attachment
to it. This doesn’t mean you give up the intention to create your desire. You don’t give up
the intention and you don’t give up the desire. You give up your attachment to the result.

This is a very powerful thing to do. The moment you relinquish your attachment to the
result, combining intention with detachment at the same time, you will have that which you
desire. Anything you want can be acquired through detachment, because detachment is based on
the unquestioning belief in the power of your true Self.

Attachment on the other hand is based on fear and insecurity—and the need for security
is based on not knowing the true Self. The source of wealth, of abundance, or of anything
in the physical world is the Self; it is the consciousness that knows how to fulfill every
need. Everything else is a symbol: cars, houses, bank notes, clothes, airplanes. Symbols
are transitory: they come and go. Chasing symbols is like settling for the map instead of
the territory. It creates anxiety; it ends up making you feel hollow and empty inside,
because you exchange your Self for the symbols of your Self.

Attachment actually comes from poverty consciousness, because attachment is always to
symbols. Detachment is synonymous with wealth consciousness, because with detachment there
is freedom to create. Only from detached involvement can one have joy and laughter. Then
the symbols of wealth are created spontaneously and effortlessly. True wealth consciousness
is the ability to have anything you want, and with least effort. To be grounded in this
experience you have to be grounded in the wisdom of uncertainty. In this uncertainty you
will find the freedom to create anything you want. When you understand detachment you won’t
feel compelled to force solutions. When you force solutions on problems, you only create new
problems. But when you put your attention on the uncertainty, and you witness the uncertainty
while you expectantly wait for the solution to emerge out of chaos and confusion, then what
emerges is something fabulous and exciting: This profound state of alertness—your preparedness
in the present, in the field of uncertainty—meets with your goal and your intention and allows
you to seize each situation, problem, or challenge as an opportunity. Once you have this
perception, you will open up to a whole range of possibilities and further unveil the mystery,
the wonder, the excitement, and the adventure of being alive.

MORE ABOUT DETACHMENT

This issue's Namaste focuses on the often challenging, always complex concept of detachment.
After all, once we have recognize that all things are possible—and have taken the time to
create clarity around our intentions and desires—the last thing many of us want to do is let
go of the dreams and desires that we have worked so diligently to create. With detachement,
we can stay very focused on our intentions and desires and the execution of our tasks, but
at the same time not be attached to any particular result.

Detaching from the outcome of our efforts requires an element of trust: Trust that the
Universe will work out the details. Trust that there is more than one way to get what we
want and that uncertainty has more to offer than just anxiety. Trust that stepping into
the field of infinite possibility will bring an infinity of choices, excitement, adventure,
magic, and mystery to your ever day life.

This edition of Namaste provides a multi-spectrum view of detachment: Dr. Chopra discusses
the fundamentals of detachment as they relate to intention and desire and Dr. Simon brings
the topic to life by discussing detachment as it relates to our day-to-day experiences.
We have also included discourse on the topic from OSHO and The Bhagavad Gita.

EXCERPT FROM THE ABSOLUTE TAO - "OSHO"

The world is muddy. How will you find repose in it? How will you find peace in it?
By lying still. You don’t do anything, Don’t try to purify it, otherwise you will
muddle it more. Just lie down on the bank, wait. By lying still it becomes clear on
its own accord. Don’t be worried about transforming the world; don’t be worried about
changing others. Who are you? And who has sent you on this mission to change others?
Everybody is directly related to the divine. Why are you there to interfere?
You just sit silently.

EXCERPT FROM THE BHAGAVAD GITA

Krishna continues: The person who works in the world without needing or expecting a reward
is both a sanyasi (true renunciate) and karma yogi (action yogi). But the person who merely
refrains from acting in the world is neither of these. You cannot just discard worldly duties,
but must do them to the utmost extent of your human capacity for excellence.

I repeat Arjuna, nobody can really become one with the Godhead without leaving their desires
behind and abandoning their attachment to the fruits of their actions. The paths of desireless
action (karma yoga) renunciation (sanyasa) may seem to be different from one another but they
are not. All spiritual growth is based in surrendering attachments and selfish motivations.
(Chapter 6 verse 1-2, Bhagavad Gita: A Walkthrough for Westerners. Jack Hawley).

OPPOSITE VALUES

Life is the coexistence of opposite values. As human beings we face the challenge of living
as individuals while expanding awareness of our universal nature. The mind creates the
paradox and provides the tools to resolve it.

Try this now. As you are reading these words bring your attention to the silent ever-present
witness to your thoughts and observations. The immutable aspect of your being that observes
the ever-changing forms and phenomena enables you to be non-attached even while engaging in
the seductions of the world. The wise ones tell us we are in this world but not of it.

When you awaken from your dream you may ask, “Was it real?” In one state of consciousness it
was, while from another it wasn’t. Is your waking life real? The experience of waking state
of consciousness is very absorbing, but perhaps another dream from a different state of awareness.

I encourage you to enthusiastically experience the joys and sorrows, gains and losses of your
individuality with its attachments to time, space, causality, matter, and energy. I encourage
you to take time in meditation to experience your unbounded inner world, which is transcendent
to beginnings and ends. Over time, time will lose its hold on you. You will lose your hold on
you. Then you will remember your essential self in which attachment and non-attachment merge.

ASK DEEPAK

Question:
I am struggling with the concept of detachment in the day to day world. The Gita teaches
that non-attachment is crucial for realizing your true self and that when the mind and
senses become unaffected by the objects of the world, the veil of ignorance will be lifted
and the magnificence of the true self will be revealed. How is one supposed to become
detached and still be a loving father and husband with devotion to his family? How can
I serve God in my job and be detached from this ego-formed image as a professional healer?
I know that the structure of my family will change and that someday I will no longer serve
my patients, but unless I am devoted in the present moment, am I not serving God's purpose
by doing my very best in the roles I play in the moment?

Answer:
One is not supposed to become detached. Detachment is a by-product of self-realization,
and not an objective in itself. The Bhagavad Gita is right about the significance of
detachment in enlightenment, but detachment is a description of the relationship of the
Self with the non-Self, not a prescription for how to attain that realization. You can
continue to be a loving and affectionate husband and father, while growing in
self-realization, and detachment at the same time.
